HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2014 has been a massive year for me, in fact one of the most eventful years of my entire life. I had my second baby, a beautiful boy and one of the lights of my life. I worked on a massive project with Christina from Hair Romance (our DIY Bridal Beauty Library – check it out here if you haven’t already seen it). I sold a house and almost everything I owned and moved with my family from the Blue Mountains of Australia, to the second largest city in the Netherlands. My daughter started school, left that school and started again at a wonderful new school. All of these changes have fundamentally changed me as a person, and were a cumulative trigger for my new minimalist philosophy on life (read more here).
For the last few years, I’ve finished the year with a round up of the most popular posts on Makeup Utopia over the last 12 months, and this year is no different. I find it fascinating to see which articles have been most popular, and this year there seems to be a mix of old and new posts, and mostly reviews, with a few informative posts thrown in for good measure.
The 14th most popular post on Makeup Utopia this year was my review of the Lipstick Queen Discovery Kit. I really enjoyed these lipsticks, and all of them are still currently in my possession, despite my makeup kit being grossly downsized.
The 13th most popular post on Makeup Utopia in 2014 was my round-up of the MAC trend predictions for Spring/Summer 2014. I love getting a sneak peek at the makeup trends straight off the catwalk, and it seems like you enjoyed it as well.
Number 12 on the most popular posts of 2014 list is an oldy but a goody. Waaaay back in 2012 I wrote a comprehensive breakdown of foundation application methods in my Makeup Brush Confidential – Foundation Brushes article. It gives a bit of an idea about the ways you can apply foundation to your face, and the different effects each technique achieves.
The 11th most popular article this year was another review…. of another lipstick! MAC Ruby Woo is arguably the most famous lipstick MAC makes, and my review, published in 2012, is still getting hits – I guess people want to know what they’re in for before they buy the iconic lipstick.
I’m not at all surprised to see Makeup Microbiology in this list, in fact I’m surprised it’s only reached number 10. This article, written by Lizzi back in early 2012 is a perennial classic – and after you read it, I can almost guarantee you’ll be inspired to wash ALL your makeup brushes.
Number 9 was a bit of a surprise to me, this Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick review never struck me as anything special, but apparently they’re more popular than I realised.
The 8th most popular post on Makeup Utopia this year was my review of some of the original Maybelline Color Tattoos. These were so popular when they launched, and although the hype has died down, they perform so well that they have retained their popularity.
Number 7 on the list is my review of MAC Lady Danger lipstick. It’s another of MAC’s most popular lipsticks, and it’s somewhat comparable in appearance to Ruby Woo (in fact I compare them side-by-side in the article).
Another article I’m not surprised to see on the list came in at number 6 – I asked if cheap MAC, NARS and Benefit makeup was too good to be true? Grey market makeup is a massive problem, particularly in Australia, and it’s a topic I have definite opinions about – so much so that I was interviewed by the Australian Financial Review.
Another surprise on the list is this review of some L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipsticks, which came in at number 5. I had mixed feelings about these lipsticks, and they didn’t make the cut when I last culled my makeup.
The 4th most popular post this year was my review of MAC Mineralize Moisture Foundation. I loved this foundation at the time, but my feelings have changed somewhat. I wore it recently and felt like it sat on top of my skin without melding properly, and ended up causing pools of pigment in my pores. It’s still in my personal kit, but I’ll be doing a New Years cull, and I’m afraid it’s time for this foundation to go.
Another old post that I keep updating as the years go by is number 3 on the list. The L’Oreal Paris Infallible Eyeshadows are incredibly popular, and in my humble opinion, they represent the very best eyeshadows on offer at the drugstore. I currently have detailed hand and eye swatches of 12 shades.
A review of a kit essential has made the number 2 spot on the list (after taking out the top spot for 2 years in a row) – it’s my review of MAC Face & Body Foundation. This is still one of the very best foundations on the market, and I will never not have this as a part of my kit.
The top spot is a bit of a surprise, my detailed review of the entire collection of L’Oreal Shine Caresse Glossy Stains was the most popular article on Makeup Utopia this year. These gloss/stain hybrids were the first product of their kind to hit the drugstore, they sold out almost as soon as they hit the shelves, and they’re pretty damn great. Apparently you thought so too, knocking MAC Face and Body out of the top spot after 2 years.
It’s always interesting to see what you guys have enjoyed reading, and this year the clear winner has been lipstick reviews – I’ll try and incorporate more into my editorial schedule moving forward.
